Self-Direct Program

Has your business completed energy efficiency projects since 2007? If so, you can earn valuable energy efficiency credits by submitting those projects to AEP Ohio.

The Self-Direct Program rewards qualifying customers who submit previous projects through one of two energy efficiency credit options:

  1. An energy efficiency credit payment of 75% of the calculated incentive amount under the Prescriptive or Custom Program; or
  2. An exemption from the Energy Efficiency/Peak Demand Reduction (EE/PDR) rider for a specified number of months.

Note: The EE/PDR rider is an additional fee based on usage that is added to all customer bills for recovery of implementation and payment costs for energy efficiency and demand response programs.

Customer Eligibility Business customers who meet one of the following criteria are eligible:

  • Annual energy usage greater than 700,000 kWh; or
  • A national or regional account with multiple facilities in one or more states.

Project Eligibility

  • Submitted projects must be installed between January 1, 2007 and the date of acceptance into the program.
  • Projects are accepted into the Self-Direct Program by AEP Ohio and the Public Utility Commission of Ohio (PUCO) on a case-by-case basis.
  • Projects must produce verifiable and persistent energy savings (kWh) and/or peak demand reduction (kW), for at least five years from the date of installation, through an increase in efficiency or through the use of load-shifting technologies.

How the program works

  1. Please complete the following documents and submit to AEP Ohio:
    • Application Form (PDF)
    • Download the appropriate calculation spreadsheet:

      2. The Self-Direct Prescriptive Spreadsheet (XLS) for lighting conversions and installations covered in the Prescriptive Program.
    • Supporting documentation as described in the application form
    • Note: Emailed submissions with attachments are preferred.
  2. AEP Ohio reviews and pre-approves your application and supporting documentation. If adjustments are needed, AEP Ohio will work with you to make the necessary changes.
  3. The pre-approved application package is submitted to the PUCO for their review and approval.
  4. AEP Ohio and/or PUCO Staff may perform a random inspection of installations.
  5. The energy efficiency credit payment or EE/PDR rider exemption is processed upon PUCO approval.
